St Polycarp, according to Saint Jermone, was made Greek Bishop of Smyrna in Asia Minor by John the Apostle. He was born in circa 69 and died for his martyrdom in 156. St Polycarp earned the respect of Christians everywhere and is considered to be an Apostolic and prophetic teacher.
His martyrdom is legendary for the miracle of his unburning flesh. Strength given to him through God’s voice from the heaven’s that spoke to him, “Be strong and show yourself a man.” St Polycarp spoke his gratitude before the fire kindled; “I give thanks that you counted me worthy, of this day and this hour that I should be a part in your martyrs…”
